The iconic Filipino jeepney has been a staple in the Philippine culture since the 1950s. As the December 31, 2023, deadline looms, only 40% of jeepneys in the National Capital Region (NCR) have successfully consolidated, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr). President Bongbong Marcos has refused to extend the deadline, leading to concerns about the fate of non-consolidated operators after January 1, 2024.

Efforts to resist the phase-out include transport strikes, protests, and social media campaigns by jeepney owners, operators, and supportive Filipinos. The Supreme Court has also been petitioned by various groups, including PISTON and Bayan Muna party-list, to halt the PUVMP implementation.
Despite these challenges, the DOTr reports that 70% of jeepneys nationwide have consolidated, showing mixed progress in the program's implementation. The fate of the traditional jeepney remains uncertain as Filipinos rally to preserve this cultural icon amidst the evolving landscape of public transportation in the Philippines.
